Citizenship Application Process
To become a Canadian citizen, most applicants must
• Be a permanent resident
• Have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days)
• Have filed your taxes if you need to
• Pass a citizenship test
• Prove your language skills in English or French
Other requirements may apply.
Citizenship Ceremony
In the ceremony, you will:
• Take the Oath of Citizenship
• Sign the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship form
• Sing the national anthem, O Canada
• Get your citizenship certificate
Canadian Passport
A Canadian passport is the passport issued to citizens of Canada. It enables the bearer to enter or re-enter Canada freely; travel to and from other countries in accordance with visa requirements.
Expiration: 5 or 10 years after acquisition for adults (age 16 years and older), and 5 years for children under 16
